You do not have to have auto insurance in Delaware. However, you'll
probably want it, considering the alternative. If you choose to insure yourself,
you have to show proof of financial responsibility of $1.5 million. In other words, you have to provide the Department of Motor Vehicles with a
certified letter from your accountant that proves you can finance a $1.5 million
judgment against you. Most folks in Delaware choose to buy auto
insurance instead.
When you buy auto insurance you have to have at least:
$15,000/$30,000 worth of bodily injury liability coverage
$10,000 worth of property damage liability coverage
$15,000/$30,000 worth of personal injury protection (PIP).
These coverages may not protect you and your vehicle as much as you wish.
You can always purchase more coverage, but keep in mind that when you raise your coverages, you raise your premiums.
In addition, if you have a loan on your car, you'll probably have to
purchase comprehensive and collision insurance. Uninsured / underinsured motorist
coverage is also an option. Remember, these are not mandatory insurance coverages, but they are available to those who want them.
Don't drive uninsured
If you are caught driving without insurance, you will be penalized. If you
drive without insurance and are caught and convicted, you lose your
license for six months and must pay a $1,500 fine. That's for your first offense. If
you're caught again, you must pay a $3,000 fine. Make sure your insurance is up to date because the Division of Motor Vehicles randomly checks for
minimum insurance coverage.
If you're having trouble getting insurance, don't fret!
Delaware offers auto insurance to its "high risk" drivers through the Delaware
Auto Plan. If you have a less-than-stellar driving record, if you're a beginner
driver, or if you drive a high-performance vehicle, you may need this last-resort plan. You can only get the information for the Delaware Assigned
Risk Plan from an insurance agent. Make sure you can't get insurance coverage anywhere else, because these policies generally carry the highest
premiums in the state. See FAQ about Assigned
Risk Plan
